7 Nights in Paradise: My Experience on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam

Last week I had the chance to sail on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam through the Eastern Caribbean. We were looking forward to this quick escape since the itinerary had the perfect mix of vibrant islands, lazy sea days, and just enough adventure.
Holland America is the oldest cruise line in the US; they started off about 150 years ago transporting European immigrants from Rotterdam, Netherlands to the US. They now have ships cruising the entire world but are still honoring their Dutch roots – which is dear to me because my roots are Dutch as well!
Here’s how it all unfolded.
Day 1: Fort Lauderdale – Smooth Start
We sailed out of Fort Lauderdale at 7 PM. There’s something magical about that first evening—standing on deck with a drink in hand, watching other cruise lines depart on their journeys and seeing the Florida coastline fade into the horizon. It’s that perfect “vacation starts now” moment.
Day 2: At Sea – Settling In
I love having a sea day early in the itinerary. It gives you time to explore the ship, try a few of the dining options (Pinnacle Grill didn’t disappoint), and ease into cruise life. For me, it was all about finding a quiet spot to enjoy the ocean views and getting lost in a good book.
When we came back to our cabin, we were greeted by this cute towel elephant. That reminds me to give a shout-out to our stewards who were so friendly, immediately remembered our names and took amazing care of us.
Day 3: Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos – Easy Breezy
Grand Turk is small but packed with charm. I spent my morning swimming in the crystal-clear water, found a shady beach-chair and then grabbed a drink at Jack’s Shack—a local favorite. It’s the kind of laid-back stop that lets you fully unwind.
Day 4: San Juan, Puerto Rico – History and Flavor

We arrived in San Juan at 1 PM, which gave me just enough time to wander through the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. I explored the historic forts, soaked in the vibrant colors of the colonial buildings, and ended the day with some amazing local food. San Juan never disappoints—there’s always something new to discover. We left around 9pm.
Day 5: St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – Views and Vibes
St. Thomas was an early start at 7 AM, but it was worth it. Friends that had visited St. Thomas before invited us to join them to Water Island - with a quick 10-minute ferry ride we ended up in a secluded white-sand beach, blue water and a small restaurant where we enjoyed conch fritters (and some tropical drinks!). Amazing vibes.
Oh, and there was a car/boat that pulled up right as we were leaving!
In short: whether you’re into shopping, snorkeling, or just soaking in the Caribbean breeze, St. Thomas gives you options.
Day 6: At Sea – Recharge and Reflect
Another sea day, and I was ready for it. I love that Holland America gives you space to do as much - or as little - as you want. Whether it’s a spa treatment, a culinary class, or just enjoying the quiet with a glass of wine, this day was all about recharging.
I mentioned earlier the Dutch traditions on Holland America cruises. For example, they serve “Bitterballen” as an afternoon snack – it’s a Dutch savory meatball, best enjoyed with a beer or a glass of prosecco!

Day 7: Half Moon Cay, Bahamas – Private Island Bliss
Half Moon Cay is Holland America’s private island, and honestly, it’s pure paradise. The powder-soft sand, turquoise waters, and peaceful vibe make it the perfect final stop. I spent most of the day in the water, shopping for souvenirs and just soaking up the sun. It’s a great way to wrap up an incredible week.
Day 8: Fort Lauderdale – Back to Reality
We docked early back in Fort Lauderdale, and just like that, it was over. But wow—what a week!
Why This Cruise Was a Standout for Me
- Balanced Itinerary: A great mix of adventure and relaxation.
- Nieuw Statendam’s Comfort: Spacious, elegant, and never too crowded. And eye for detail (who would think to have a mat in the elevator with what day of the week it is... super handy since you loose track of time on a cruise)
- Unique Ports: Each stop offered something different, from history to beach bliss.
If you’re thinking about a similar Caribbean escape, this itinerary hits all the right notes. And if you’re ready to plan your next adventure, let’s chat—I’d love to help you design a trip that’s just as unforgettable!
